In 1936, two young men from the area realized the need for property insurance protection. After consulting with local residents, it was decided to research the possibility of forming a Mutual insurance company, which would provide affordable insurance coverage for the people of the immediate and surrounding communities.
On March 30, 1937, the ”CLARE MUTUAL FIRE INSURANCE COMPANY” was founded.
At the beginning, only Fire coverage was sold. Over the years, in order to be on a competitive level with the other insurance companies selling in these areas, Theft and Liability coverages had to be added to make up the coverages that are being sold today.
The aim of the Company was to provide better and more personal service to its Members and this continues to be the aim today. The Customer Service Representatives and Staff are there to provide the Members with the best service possible. Personal home visits by the Agents, doing business at the kitchen table, being able to talk face to face with a representative of the Company are the real distinctive traits from other insurance companies.
The Members are the Company – they are its Voting Members and have a right to their say about how the Company is run at the Annual General Meeting.
On March 29, 1994, by Order in Council from the Government of the Province of Nova Scotia, the name of the Company was officially changed to read, ”Clare Mutual Insurance Company”. This deleted the word ”Fire” from the name as the Company was now in business of selling more than just Fire insurance to its Members.
Clare Mutual Insurance Company has been in existence for over 75 years by successfully keeping the dreams of the founding Members alive. They had a strong sense of the duty and determination to create a Company for its people that was to provide affordable insurance. They gave the Company its beginning and TOGETHER, WE MUST TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE TO SEE THAT IT REMAINS A VIABLE COMPANY FOR THE COMING GENERATIONS.
